Special test of the Spine, Trunk

  1. Functional or structure test = Adam’s forward bend test
    • To Assess scoliosis
  2. Valsalva’s test
    • To assess for a space-occupying lesion(ex, herniated disc, osteophyte or tumor)
    • Positive: local pain or radiating pain
  3. Kemp test
    • To assess nerve root compression(for herniated disc or facet joint irritation) in the lumbar spine
    • Local pain : facet joint irritation
    • Radiating pain and neurological sign : nerve root compression
  4. Quadrant test
    • Variation of the kemp test
  5.  Kernig’s test/Brudzinski test
    • To assess nerve root involvement, meningeal irritation or dural irritation
  6. Slump test
    • To assess spinal occupying lesion, herniated disc, spinal cord irritation
  7. SLR ( Straight Leg Raised) test
    • To assess herniated disc or nerve root irritation in lumbar spine
    • Pain in 35-70 degree : sciatic nerve compression, herniated disc
    • Pain in over 70 degree : joint pathology
    • Braggard’s test : + Dorsiflexion of foot
    • Neri’s sign : + neck flexion
    • Freiburg sign
  8. Well SLR or Fajerztajn’s test = Crossed straight leg raise test
    • To assess SOL or disc herniation
  9. Pheasnat test
  10. Rebound tenderness test = Blumberg sign
