- Flaccid(weak and relaxed muscle) paralysis of facial nerve(CN VII) by inflammation the nerve
- Cause
- Unknown
- Compression from edema
- Trauma
- Exposure to a chill or draft
- Symptoms
- Unilateral weakness : inability to raise the eyebrows, incomplete closure of the eye, the loss of the blinking reflex, inability to raise the corners of mouth, difficulty holding the lower lip to a glass to prevent dribbling
- Sensory and autonomics symptoms : dry eye d/t loss of control of lacrimation, dry mouth d/t decrease of salivation, loss of taste
- Orthopedic test
- Chvostek’s test
- Orbicularis oculi strength test
- Massage treatment
- Hydrotherapy : cool on affected tissue, local heat on shortened muscle
- Massage is performed on the unaffected side first
- Unaffected side
- MLD
- Swedish massage : toward to lesion site( from lateral to midline of the face)
- Affected side
- Strokes is from midline towards the lesion
- Stimulating techniques : vibration or tapping
- No fascial techniques
- No deep and long dragging strokes
