Knee and leg – Shin splint

  1. Inflammation of the tibial periosteum= periostitis = medial tibial stress syndrome = tibial tenoperiostitis
  2. Risk factors : overuse, pes planus, Tight Achilles tendon
  3. Symptoms and signs
    • Aching or dull pain down the front of one or both legs.
    • Shins that are painful to the touch.
    • Pain that worsens during or after exercise.
    • Pain that improves with rest
    • Intensive tenderness of the involved medial tibial border
  4. Treatment
    1. Acute stage
      • RICE
      • MLD – proximal to the painful area
      • Swedish, trp on compensation muscles
      • Self care : ice apply 3 to 4 time per day
    2. chronic
      • Heat on gastrocnemius and soleus
      • Fascia on gastrocnemius, soleus
      • Cross fiber friction on soleus, tibialis posterior and flexor digitorum longus
      • Pre- activity : heat, self massage to the posterior compartment muscles, stretching of gastrocnemius and soleus
