      • Transverse ligament : stabilizer for the odontoid process preventing it from posterior migration.
      • Alar ligament : limit axial rotation and lateral bending on the contralateral side
      • Apical ligament : restricts flexion as well as anterior displacement of the atlas
      • Nuchal ligament : a continuation of the supraspinous ligament. It attaches to the tips of the spinous processes from C1-C7, and provides the proximal attachment for the rhomboids and trapezius.
