Myofascial Trigger Points

    • A Trigger Point (TrP) is a hyperirritable spot, a palpable nodule in the taut bands of the skeletal muscles’ fascia.

    • A healthy muscle does not contain trigger points. Taut bands of muscle fibres and tenderness are not presented.

    1. Active trigger point
      1. Painful at rest and with movement
      2. difficult to fully lengthening of the muscles and Reduce the muscle strength
    2. Latent trigger point
      1. Pain only when palpated
      2. difficult to fully lengthening of the muscles and Reduce the muscle strength
  4. How to release the trigger point
    1. Warm up the muscle
      1. Heat hydrotherapy for 5-10 minutes
      2. Effleurage and petrissage to warm up the muscle
        • 3 times kneading -> 3 times stripping -> 3 times kneading
    2. Thumb or finger stripping to feel the muscle fibers
    3. Feel the taut band, or jumping response. That is the trigger point. Comfirm that you are locating on the right muscle by isometric action.
    4. Ischemic compression for 1-2 minutes
      1. Keep communication with the client by asking
        1. How is the pain scale? The ideal pain scale is “7”
        2. Ask about the referral pain
    5. Release the compression on trigger point ; when the client feels the pain diminished, or aftrer 1-2 minutes compression
    6. Flush the area for 30 seconds to remove the toxins(unidirectional towards to the heart)
    7. Passive stretch for 30 seconds. No bouncing movement
    8. Heat again for another 3-5 minutes to relax it
