  1. Anterior Scalene
    1. Origin : anterior tubercle of transvers process of vertebrae C3-C6
    2. Insertion : First rib
  2. Middle Scalene
    1. Origin : posterior tubercles of transverse processes of vertebrae C2-C7
    2. Insertion : First rib
  3. Posterior Scalene
    1. Origin : posterior tubercles of transverse processes of vertebrae C6-C7
    2. Insertion : Second rib
  4. Action of All scalenes
    1. Bilateral contraction
      1. Neck flexion
      2. Elevate the ribs during inhalation
    2. Unilateral contraction
      1. neck lateral flexion (ipsilateral)
      2. neck rotation (contralateral)

Muscle testing

  1. Length(Streching) test : SCALENES MUSCLE LENGTH TEST – YouTube
    1. Anterior Scalenes : slightly extend head –> contralateral flexion and ipsilateral rotation
    2. Middle Scalenes : slightly extend head –> contralateral flexion
    3. Posterior Scalenes : slightly extend head –> contralateral flexion and contralateral rotation
  2. Stength test
    1. Anterior Scalenes : slightly flex head –>ipsilateral flexion and contralateral rotation –> resist each motion
    2. Middle Scalenes : slightly flex head –> ipsilateral flexion –>resist that motion
    3. Posterior Scalenes : slightly flex head –> ipsilateral flexion and ipsilateral rotation –>resist each motion

    1. Procedure
      1. Fully rotate the head to the affected side
      2. Neck flecion to the same side
      3. pull the chin inferioly into the hollow hust posterior to the clavicle
    2. Positive : Pain in the referred pattern for the scalane muscles
