TMJ Disorder

  1. What is it
    • TMJ dysfunction (TMD) causes pain and tenderness in your jaw joints and surrounding muscles and ligaments.
  2. Sign and sx
    • Pain , ear discomfort, headache, jaw dysfunction(trismus, lockding), jaw sounds(clicking/popping)
    • Decrease ROM
  3. Cause
    • Exact cause unknown
    • Mastication muscle : hypertonicity, spasm
    • Muscle overuse
    • Postural dysfunction : hyperkyphosis
    • Stress
    • trauma
  4. Orthopedic test
    • TMJ ROM
    • Knuckle test
  5. Treatment Plan
    • If there is edema → MLD
    • If hyperkyphosis exist → massage as hyperkyphosis
    • Tight muscle (mastication muscle : temporalis, masseter, lateral/medial pterygoid, suprahyoids, infrahyoids) → trigger point, fascia techniques
    • Intra oral massage treatment 
    • When temporalis and masseter are massaged, the direction of strokes from superior to inferior to avoid compressing the mandible. → do not use techniques that compress the mandible superiorly
    • Self stretching – gentle traction is applied in an inferior direction
